Beat the Heat
Acid is key to tempering oven-bake temperatures. Grüner Veltliner is citrusy, offers bristling acidity balanced with a delicate floral flair and finishes with a dash of white-pepper spice. To up the ante further, add effervescence to acidity by pouring a bottle of extra brut Champagne. Irresistibly dry, with bracing lemon acidity, is there a better way to luxe-ify your day at the beach than with a bottle of bubbly?
Tame the Tides
Fresh from a swim in the waves, a surf session or a bout on a stand-up paddle board, when the taste of salt is lingering on your lips you’ll want a wine that’s brisk with minerality and just a touch of the sea. Muscadet, from the coastal reaches of France’s Loire Valley is a crisp white wine with notes of crushed oyster shell and sea salt and bright lemon and apple flavors. It’s known as a classic pairing for oysters, but when lounging sur la plage, it’s the perfect post-dip drink.
Pair the Protection
Covered in suntan lotion with notes of coconut, cocoa butter and tropical fruit? Then reach for an uber aromatic white wine to sync with your sun worshipping. Gewürztraminer, with its luscious aromas of lychee, pink grapefruit and rose petal, bursts with tropical fruit power. For a Gewürz with more thirst-quenching acidity than found in Alsace, turn to New World, cool-climate offerings from New Zealand, Washington State or the Finger Lakes region of New York.
